Are Chromebooks the Best Laptops under 300 Bucks?

This table shows that Chromebooks are favored by the majority of people and are considered as the best laptops under 300 dollars.Okay, so Chromebooks aren’t exactly laptops but to avoid confusion, I think it’s a good idea to call them laptops. At ridiculously low prices, Chromebooks have taken the PC market by storm and are becoming seriously popular. I’m a big fan of them as well and think they work very well. Other websites seem to agree with me as well. In fact, 5 Chromebooks were included in this top 10 best laptops under 300 dollars list. Obviously, it’s up to you to decide on what’s best for you but my suggestion would be to not write off Chromebooks before using them first.

One thing is for sure; it’s not often that you find a Windows laptop for less than $300. Even if you do, it looks terrible and weights about 2kg. I don’t know about you but I’d rather not have an ugly-looking 2kg laptop on my lap while surfing the web. I’ve got a Macbook Air and love using it, but it’s too expensive for a lot of people. If you just occasionally surf the web, I’m sure you wouldn’t really want to spend $1,000 on a laptop. With Chromebooks, I believe you get the best of both worlds. You get something very lightweight and good-looking but at the same time, something that works very well and is quick.

As an operating system, Chrome OS is very fast and literally has no lag. They often have solid state hard drives as well, which help to speed up any programs you are using. In comparison, traditional Windows laptops use those terrible hard drives that are very slow. Yes, you might get a 500GB hard drive but it will be very slow when running programs. This is probably one of the main reasons as to why I would consider Chromebooks as the best laptops under $300.

Let’s not forget the processor and RAM, Generally, both Windows laptops and Chromebooks have the same internal parts. Processors tend to be Intel Celeron on both machines and RAM is usually either 2GB or 4GB. In this price range, pretty much all Windows laptops will have 4GB RAM. Chromebooks like the Acer C720 only have 2GB RAM while others such as the Toshiba B3340 have 4GB. I would highly recommend getting one with 4GB as it does make a huge difference.

Chromebooks aren’t perfect though. They have their own problem, so it would be wise to do your research beforehand. For example, Skype is not officially supported yet. A lot of people who need a cheap laptop normally want one for video calling with friends abroad. It’s difficult to do that with a Chromebook. Also, bear in mind that a Chromebook is essentially a web-based machine. This means that you can’t really run programs on it. Surfing the web and watching YouTube videos is great but for any serious work, I would not recommend them.

Basically, I would advise you to think about your requirements. If you just want something for surfing the web, definitely get a Chromebook, no doubts about it. If however, you want a more powerful machine that let’s you video call and don’t necessarily care about how it looks, go with a traditional Windows laptop. Either way, Chromebooks as easily some of the best laptops under 300 dollars and I personally think you might be better off buying one instead of a Windows machine.
